Major ampage [29/03/2009] I like my pedal board. This week i'm building a fully pro replacement cabinet for my 1970s Roland Jazz Chorus chassis. It's a wonderful amp, and fully solid state at that! Haha who needs tubes? Transistors all the way! I learned the hard way the importance of lining up the chassis and measuring everything accurately... the first attempt was exactly to my awesome illustrator plans, but completely disconnected from reality, and was too wide and not tall enough. Here i'm starting from scratch again, but using the chassis to line everything up. Stupid plans! Didn't even friggen use them in the end. You cost me $40 of wood plans! $40!!! Clamping it all together to make sure it's square and the chassis and baffle fit with about 3-5 mm space all around. Lining up the all important chassis support bolts. And glued with polyurethane! All clamped down and drying as we speak.... Now ready to cut off the excess and route the edges. I used polyurethane glue in the dowels as well, these will add a lot of strength to the sides. I found out my router has a bracket that allows me to do circles! This saves me about 45 minutes in cutting circles. Perfect! I was wondering how strong the polyurethane glue would be, so i started axe kicking my previous failed attempt. It took about 7 kicks, this is the final 3! Ah, there's nothing like routed and doweled pine! Drilling the T-nuts and bolts to hold the speaker baffle in place. Bolted! And it all fits, with a nice 2 mm all around to spare! I could probably gotten away with about 1 mm however. When cutting, gluing or spraying, always wear a GI-JOE style mask. Aaaaahh, the spray fumes. I should have opened the door... All sprayed, time to staple on the speaker grill. I bought Tolex, Grill and hardware from Evatco, those guys are awesome! evatco.com.au! I fucked it up. Time to undo the 50 staples I already put into it and start again... Time to tolex the cabinet! I'll tell you something, contact glue is very frustrating. You have to wait 20 minutes after applying before you can press the tolex onto the cabinet. And once you press it on, that's it, you can't move it! Nearly done. I hate this bit. Done! I only made a few mistakes on the bottom, but the top and the front are all good! Put together at last! Looks sexy! I love the retro look it came out with. I'm glad the tolex is nice and flat. In the back, I've got a Lorantz speaker and a fender branded Eminence speaker from my Fender M80. Now it's time to clean up the garage.... urg. Sounds awesome! SICK. Go back to main page...
